The Profession
A discipline where engineering precision meets human compassion — restoring movement, independence, and dignity.
A Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist (CPO) is a highly specialised clinician and master craftsman who designs, fabricates, and fits custom medical devices for people who have lost a limb or who have a physical impairment affecting the function of their musculoskeletal system.
Prostheses replace missing limbs — enabling an amputee to walk, run, work, and live. Orthoses support and correct existing limbs affected by paralysis, neurological conditions, trauma, or congenital differences. Together, these interventions form one of medicine's most profound intersections of engineering, biomechanics, and human care.
But the role of a CPO goes far beyond fabricating a device. It begins with a deep clinical assessment of each patient's anatomy, gait, lifestyle, and goals. It demands mastery of materials science, biomechanics, CAD/CAM technology, and anatomy — and it requires the ability to communicate sensitively across cultures and conditions, from children with cerebral palsy to veterans with complex limb loss.
Ultimately, our work is about one thing: enabling people to participate fully in daily life — to walk to work, to hold their child, to stand independently. We restore not just function, but confidence, identity, and freedom.
"We do not simply build devices. We rebuild lives — one patient at a time, one step at a time."
— Makram Tebbi, GCPOMCustom-designed artificial limbs for amputees — from activity-specific running blades to microprocessor-controlled knees and bionic hands — restoring independence and natural movement.
Precision-engineered supports, braces, and corrective systems for conditions including stroke, scoliosis, cerebral palsy, foot drop, and spinal injury — preserving or restoring functional movement.
Comprehensive postural management and custom seating systems for individuals with complex needs — ensuring safety, comfort, and maximum participation in daily life.
Working alongside surgeons, physiotherapists, neurologists, and rehabilitation teams to deliver truly holistic patient-centred care that addresses the full spectrum of need.
Professional Profile
A career defined by going where others don't — and delivering where it matters most.
My qualification path is, by any measure, exceptionally rare. Beginning with the rigorous German apprenticeship system — one of the most demanding clinical and craft training frameworks in the world — I earned my credentials as a Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist before completing the Master Craftsman qualification: a 6.5-year combined programme at the Technological Academy in Stuttgart. The German Master Craftsman title in P&O is one of the highest clinical and technical designations achievable in the profession worldwide.
From there, my path has been deliberately unconventional. Rather than following the well-trodden route within established clinical settings, I chose to build, lead, and transform — founding companies, managing large-scale operations, and introducing industrial-grade quality systems into clinical environments that had never seen them before.
In Saudi Arabia, I built what became the largest Prosthetics & Orthotics manufacturing facility in the Middle East, introducing ISO 13026 and 9001 quality management standards to the region for the first time — achieving an 1,800% increase in department revenue over eight years. In Dubai, I co-founded MOBILIS — establishing a vertically integrated P&O clinic and manufacturing operation built on German precision, regional expertise, and a deep commitment to patient outcomes.
This is complemented by an ongoing MBA at Heriot-Watt University, PMP certification, and a Lean Management & Six Sigma Black Belt in Healthcare — a combination of clinical mastery and executive management capability that remains extraordinarily rare in this profession. Most recently, this vision has extended into a consulting role with orthoBOT_X Middle East, a platform dedicated to digitally transforming P&O practices across the region.

Global Challenge & Innovation
The global shortage of P&O professionals is one of healthcare's most underreported emergencies. We are building the answer.
The World Health Organization estimates that only 5–15% of people who need assistive devices — including prostheses and orthoses — actually have access to them. In low- and middle-income countries, that gap approaches nearly 100%. Even in wealthy Gulf nations, the shortage of qualified P&O professionals is acute and growing.
Training a single Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist to an internationally recognised standard takes a minimum of 4–7 years. Worldwide, only a small number of accredited programmes exist — and their combined output barely makes a dent in global demand. The result: hundreds of millions of people with physical impairments are left without adequate care, unable to work, move freely, or participate in society.
This is not merely a clinical problem. It is an economic, social, and humanitarian crisis — one that conventional healthcare systems have consistently failed to solve through conventional means. Which is precisely where unconventional thinking becomes essential.
We are actively engaged in the development of next-generation prosthetic and orthotic devices designed to deliver clinical-grade outcomes at a fraction of the traditional cost and fabrication time — making high-quality care accessible far beyond established healthcare systems.
Alongside device development, we are building scalable clinical workflow and production systems that allow smaller teams — and less experienced practitioners — to deliver consistently high-quality outcomes. Our ELAM (Electronic Line Assembly Management) approach is a blueprint for this.
Leveraging CAD/CAM, AI-assisted design, and digital fabrication — including 3D scanning and additive manufacturing — we are reducing the human bottleneck in P&O production without compromising clinical precision. Technology does not replace the clinician; it empowers them to do more.
As Professional Consultant for orthoBOT_X Middle East, I help P&O clinics and manufacturers across the region connect with world-leading innovators — bringing faster, more precise, and more cost-efficient fabrication methods to practitioners who are ready to transform their practice through digital technology.
The future of this profession will not be built by those who wait for established systems to catch up. It requires practitioners willing to challenge orthodoxy, experiment boldly, and build from scratch — while holding the highest professional and clinical standards as non-negotiable. That has always been our approach.
